Army sleeping bags, slugs, scratchers, gonk bag if you prefer, have been a topic of debate for many years. The pussers or issued “bouncing bomb” is bulky, heavy and for many impractical. RVOps recognised that many of you needed a sleeping bag that was light weight but tough enough to withstand the rigours of military operations or exercise. The Haglofs Zensor range of sleeping bags, Terra Nova Laser down sleeping bag range coupled with Snugpaks’ Softie range of military sleeping bags provide the military user with sleeping bags which are lightweight with excellent warmth to weight ratio, reliability, affordability and quality.
Warmth to weight ratio is key when choosing your army sleeping bag in the military. Add to this the area of operations you may be using your slug and your half way there to choosing the optimum sleeping bag. The Haglofs Zensor range of military sleeping bags has a synthetic fibre fill, which helps keep the weight of your sleeping bag to a minimum.
The Haglofs Zensor Compact is the perfect lightweight sleeping bag for hotter & humid climates. For the more temperate climates Haglofs has the Zensor 1 sleeping bag, the Haglofs Zensor 2 and the Zensor 3. With varied temperature ranges suitable for the hardiest of Ten Tors entrants to the individual commando on exercise on Dartmoor the Haglofs sleeping bags will give you the warmth you need from your bag. The Haglofs Nordic Winter is the daddy of all bags – suitable for the coldest of exercises in Norway.
You will find the Haglofs Zensor sleeping bags stand up to all your high expectations. All military equipment should be maintained and looked after. We would highly recommend the Haglofs sleeping bag liner. The Haglofs sleeping bag liner will do two things, extend the life of your sleeping bag, protecting it from the abuse we expect you to give it and increase the warmth of your bag by a couple of degrees.
Snugpak have been producing sleeping bags for military operational environments for what seems like an eternity. Snugpak’s range of softie sleeping bags have been tried and tested in the harshest of military environments. Their Softie range is manufactured in desert tan, olive green and black, these pertex bags with their synthetic fill incorporate all the attributes required of an army sleeping bag. Named after birds of prey the Snugpak sleeping bags military range is distinct. The Softie 9 “Hawk” is by far our best seller and we also have the Softie jungle bag (a jungle sleeping bag with an integrated mossie net). Their is also the Softie 10 Harrier for added warmth. The Softie 15 Discovery sleeping bag with a low temperature range of -15 degrees is an excellent 3-4 season sleeping bag. One of my favourite sleeping bags during the summer was either the Snugpak Softie 3 Merlin or Snugpak Softie 6 Kestrel. Both these lightweight military sleeping bag are ideal for situations requiring a minimalist sleeping system.
In order to give you a full choice of sleeping bags for military use we added to our range 3 Terra Nova goose down filled sleeping bags. A down filled sleeping bag is the ultimate luxury; however as with any military goose down filled sleeping bag, care must be taken when using them. Being down filled we would recommend they are only used in cold dry climates. Both the Terra Nova Laser 900 and Terra Nova Laser 600 coupled with the Terra Nova Laser 300 with their differing goose down fill weights, are super lightweight, compact and incredibly warm. Terra Nova’s attention to detail, on the Laser 300 and both the Laser 600 and Laser 900, is, second-to-none. With boxed construction being used on both sleeping bags, along with a mummy hood and baffle, make these down sleeping bags a perfect choice for those who understand what a lightweight quality down sleeping bag should be. Finally, as with the Halgofs Zensor bags, we feel a sleeping bag liner is an important addition to the Terra Nova military goose down sleeping bag range. It will do two things, extend the life of your sleeping bag, protecting it from the abuse we expect you to give it and increase the warmth of your bag by a couple of degrees.
Gas cookers & camping stoves are a constant source of debate amongst the military and an emotive subject on a par with boots: each soldier will have their favourite gas cooker, whether they be the simple cheap gas cookers, solid fuel stoves, the iconic Jetboil, MSR, Optimus Crux, the new Jetboil Sol or the Metal Mug and cooker.
RV Ops stock various models ranging from Jet boil through to the stoves from Primus and Optimus.
The most popular is the JetBoil Flash but in addition to the JetBoil Flash are the new JetBoils including the JetBoil Zip, the Sol Aluminium & the Sol Ti. Primus stoves have created a reputation in the camping stove, gas cooker & cooking stove markets with their multifuel cookers that are second-to-none. The Primus Omnifuel & Primus Multifuel have been deployed to the far reaches of the world. The Primus Gravity is a low profile, lightweight cooking stove which is very stable & perfect for military application. If you are vehicle borne using Jackal or Mastiff the robust & large double burning Primus Twin Stove maybe worthy of consideration, however if your role is a man packing role then perhaps the Primus Micron TI is more suitable in your webbing. Optimus stoves have created a reputation as affordable, reliable and easy to use gas cookers and camping stoves. The Optimus Nova Multifuel cooker allows the user to use it with a variety of fuels. Most service personnel who have been deployed to the far reaches of the world have used and appreciated the Optimus Nova’s adaptability. At the opposite end of the scale is the Optimus Crux - one of the most compact lightweight gas stoves on the market.
